Puerto Vallarta (Mexico) 2016

The second workshop of M3EF3 was held in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, on November 2-5, 2016. The workshop, which was held in the framework of the 2016 Annual Meeting of the Mexican Geophysical Union (RAUGM2016), was developed in three parts:

    • on November 2nd, a 8-hour course (course code: CO03) on the project topics has been provided to undergraduate, master, and PhD students from different universities. The course has been attended by 18 participants, with the course lectures provided by the M3EF3 project leaders, Brian D. Conway from the Arizona Department of Water Resources (USA), and Joseph Cook from the Arizona Geological Survey;
    • on November 4th, a number of talks have been given within the RAUGM  Session SE07 “Assessment of Land Subsidence processes in the world. The UNESCO Working Group on Land Subsidence”. Apporximately 30 scientists and students have attended the session;
    • on November 6th, a field trip has been carried out in the village of Jocotepec, near Guadalajara, Jalisco,where impressive ground ruptures due to excessive groundwater withdrawal developed over the last few years, strongly impacting the urban center, with several houses damaged, and affecting also the old church of the village. The field trip has been attended by 13 participants.
